Jack Russell Terrier in need of medical assistance
Last Update: October 11, 2007
Location: Virginia
Dog Name: Woody
Sex: Male
Known Issues: Bladder Stones; requires surgery
Background
Woody A Virginia veterinarian called Russell Rescue about Woody. Woody was a “walking time bomb” having stones in his bladder and 12 – 15 stones in his urethra. Since he didn't act sick, his owners didn't realize how dangerous his situation was. The clinic didn't have the equipment to do the surgery required and so called to see if Russell Rescue would help. They estimate his surgery at Virginia Tech Vet Hospital to be around $1,200 to $1,500.

Woody is a very loving, bright-eyed boy in spite of the bladder stones. Jack Russell’s can be so stoic sometimes. Without the surgery there is no doubt that Woody would have an extremely painful death some time in the near future. With surgery, he should recover completely.

While Woody isn't acting sick at the moment - his condition could become critical at any time.

Progress updates are posted below.

Hi Everyone, its ME Woody!!!

I am doing much better now that the stones are gone. I run, jump and can even open bedroom doors! Yep, open doors! My foster mom asked if I was Superman's dog!!! I have lost some weight and Cleo says that I look handsome. I think she likes me. I even let Cleo chew on my dental bone. My foster mommy says that I am improving. I am not sure what that means...it sure sounds good. I like running through out the house. You see, when I run, Taz and Cleo run with me. We like to play games. I can run faster than both Cleo and Taz. My foster mommy says that she can hear me snoring when I nap. Well, It is time for me to go to bed. I want to thank all of you for helping to pay my vet bill. You see, when you help doggies like me, then other doggies get help. We doggies and humans need to stick together. I love all of you and send you doggies kisses. Love, Woody

Hi Everyone, I wanted to give you an update on Woody. He is doing so much better with sharing his toys and dental bones. Woody is a gem of a dog. Please don't pass him up because of his age being 7 years. A Jack Russell lives quite longer than other breeds. You would not know that Woody is 7. Actually 7 is young for a Jack Russell. Woody loves being with other dogs, cats and people. He gets along with our 3 outside cats; Woody knows that they are part of our pack. We have 2 English Springer Spaniels, two Jack Russell's and 3 dumpster cats (I found them at a dumper and brought them home). I take Woody to the office (an apartment/hotel lobby) and he greets all the visitors with a wagging tail. I have Woody on a routine that fits our schedule. He sleeps with the larger dogs in the laundry room (10:00 to 6:00 am)!!! with no accidents. Woody does not care for his crate; yet he will go into a large crate for a short time. He is not destructive when left alone as long as he has his dental bone to keep him company (Woody did get into the trash in the bathroom once)... he didn't have his bone so I guess he figured he would search for it...

Woody would make a great companion for a single person or married couple. I would recommend older children since Woody likes to play (small children could get knocked over). Woody loves to snuggle with his human friends. If you think you could use a friend then Woody is your man. Don't pass up this gem.

Hi Everyone,

I am Woody's foster mommy. He asked me to let all of you know that he is doing great. Woody is sleeping on the doggie bed in my office snoring!!!! Woody gets along with our 4 dogs... two Jack Russell's and two English Springer Spaniels. Oh, did I mention that we also have 3 outside cats that seem to like Woody....he pretty much ignores them. Woody has been with us for two days now. He sleeps in his crate at night and during nap time. I gave him a bath this morning and he loved it. He sat on my lap while I dried him off and he just soaked in the attention. I get lots of kisses from Woody. He is a good boy and deserves a forever home. I will keep you updated as I get to know Woody. Don't pass up this gem. Thank you for helping pay for Woody's medical.

Hi all my JRT loving friends,

Thank you for donating to help me get well. I was taken to the Virginia Tech Veterinary Hospital, a big teaching vet hospital in Virginia (where else!). Everyone was so nice to me. I did have to spend several days at the hospital. Oh!!! all the X-rays they had to take!!! Then they did some things to me that weren't very nice! ( but I do feel so much better now).

Love, Woody

From Woody's temporary foster Mom:
Woody had 8 -10 stones in his urethra, two large enough to block urine flow. There were also 8 - 10 small stones in his bladder and one in his left kidney. Woody underwent something called lithotripsy which involves using a laser to break down the stones into fragments small enough to pass down the urethra. Once the stones were broken down, large amounts of saline were added to his bladder, the bladder was agitated and then the saline solution forced out under pressure. This happened multiple times until the bladder and urethra were clear of stones. One stone had sort of lodged in the bladder wall and so they kept him over the week-end for observation and on Monday, repeated the treatment, managing this time to remove that stone.
