Broken Legs |
Hi, I'm Scooter, and I was recently in a bad accident and I have to have surgery to repair both of my back legs. A nice lady picked me up on the side of the highway and contacted a lady named Misty with Russell Rescue in Tennessee to help. She thinks I had been hit by a car, but I don't remember much about it except that it hurt really bad and I was alone and afraid. Misty's fiance picked me up and brought me to Chattanooga, TN where she took me to see Dr. Chermack and Dr. Federico. I had some things called an x-ray done where they take pictures of my injuries, and it turns out that I had a severe fracture on my right hind leg and a severe dislocation on my left hind leg. I will need surgery on both legs to repair the damage, but the doctor want to do them one at a time. Russell Rescue and I would very much appreciate your help with my medical bills so that I can get the surgery I need and find a wonderful forever home soon.
Progress updates are posted below.

Hi Everyone! It’s me, SCOOTER! It’s been a long time since you’ve heard from me and so much has happened I want to share with you.
Thanks to my wonderful Foster Mom Misty nursing me back to health, my new parents were able to come and bring me to my new forever home in July. My new Mommy told me I was her birthday present and WOW – I felt special right off the bat as I’ve never been ANYone’s birthday present! My Mom and Dad came all the way up to Tennessee to get me. I had a very long ride back to Jacksonville.
Life is very good for me. I love my new home and have really settled in now. I’m the King of the Roost. My Mom never stops loving me and my Dad is terrific. He takes me to the park, and to the boat ramp to play and introduced me to the Dog Park a couple of weeks ago! that’s my favorite thing. I miss all my Tenn buddies alot, so I’m happy to make new friends now! I get around just fine with my legs and can tear it up with the best of them!
I stayed at my first Bed and Breakfast last weekend. My parents take me everywhere. I really liked it and loved all the new sites and smells. I’m a real Florida Man now. When it warms up my Mom & Dad have this thing called a boat that they want to take me on. The last time I was in water was for my therapy, so I’m a little scared, but I’ll take it slow. I’m going South in a couple of months with them. I’m going to the Florida Keys and as you can see in this picture, I’ve got my shades all ready for my vacation!
I’m a very happy and very loved little guy. Thank you everyone for all your help and support.
Love and Licks,
Scooter

Hi everyone! It's me again. I had my second physical therapy appointment last night, and I did so well! My foster mom, Misty, and my physical therapist, Cassie, were soooooo proud of me. Last night I did a total of 20 minutes or so on the underwater treadmill....not all 20 minutes at one time, but 5 minute sessions. It was strange at first, and I didn't really know what to think. I was a bit frightened, but once I got the hang of it. I think they thought that I would just hold my leg up and not use it, but I showed them that I could do it, and I walked on my hurt leg the entire time. I was rather sore afterwards, and my foster mom gave me some medicine to help it feel better.
She said she knew it hurt, but it would be good for me and I would be glad I stuck it out later on. Oh, and did I mention that I got extra treats and snuggles for doing such a good job? That was the best part. Cassie said I will get to get on the underwater treadmill again next week for a bit longer. It sure does make me tired and sore, but I'll be glad when I can use my leg all the time again. We are going to get video and pictures of me on the treadmill next week so you can see how well I'm doing. Oh! And I get to be in Cassie's new marketing literature for her physical therapy so I'll be a star! Until next week......

Hi everyone! It's me, Scooter! I hope you all had a great Easter holiday. I had my first physical therapy visit last Wednesday, and I did so well. Cassie, my physical therapist, thinks I am so handsome and sweet, and she was so nice to me. We did some exercises with a big huge ball. What dog doesn't like the biggest ball ever?!?! Then I did some work on some kind of squishy contraption and a ramp which magically got steeper and steeper so I had to use my injured leg more and more. She loaned my foster mom her ramp so that I could get some exercise at home as well. She also gave us something called homework which just basically meant that my foster mom had to work with me each day for about 15 minutes at a time. I was a bit sore and very tired after our first session, but the good news is that I am starting to realize that using my leg isn't so bad. The more I do it, the easier it is. I am still limping some, but I have started standing on my leg to "do my business" and I have started walking on it from time to time.....usually when I get excited and forget that it hurts. I have another appointment with Cassie this Wednesday and she said something about water and doggie paddling. I guess I'll just have to wait and see what that means. But since I don't have any signs of nerve damage, Cassie and my foster mom think I have a good chance at making a full recovery. Well, I hear one of the other dogs in the house barking at squirrels so I have to go see what's up with that and see if I can help. Thank you all for your prayers, nice emails, and assitance with my medical bills. Talk to you again soon.

Scooter went to the vet for a checkup today. Dr. Federico says he is healing nicely and can begin physical therapy. The physical therapist is out of town at the moment so his first appointment will be on March 19th. In the meantime, we are doing some light massage and stretching 3 times a day. It has been 2 weeks since his operation, and he has been such a trooper. He is so affectionate and calm thoughout all of this. He will make someone a wonderful family member once he is well enough for adoption. Scooter sends his love and kisses and will send you an update himself soon.

Well, after spending a couple of nights at the doctor's office, I had my surgery done on my first leg. The vet techs and doctors were great and they fixed me right up. They even gave me lots of kisses before I left today. I just love attention. My foster mom, Misty, says I am one of the sweetest Jack Russell Terriers she has ever met. I'm in a lot of pain and still very sleepy, but I can get around okay. I will have to have the same operation on the other leg in a few weeks, and after that, I'll have to have physical therapy. Pippin, my foster mom's dog (who was also a Russell Rescue dog) said that the lady who will do my therapy is awesome. Well, I'm getting sleepy again, but I'll write more when I'm feeling a bit better. Hugs and kisses to all of you!
Love, Scooter
