Torn his cruciate ligament in his knee |
Duke is back in the rescue at no fault of his own, as he is a very sweet and independent Jack. His adoptive parents have come to some crossroads and unable to attend to their dogs at this time. So, with a heavy heart, they have given Duke back to us in hopes to find another loving home. Duke loves to play ball and with stuffed toys, he loves to take naps – especially under the covers with his foster parents. He likes to have baths and go on walks. He is crate and house trained, up to date on his vaccines and neutered. Out of all the Jacks we have personally fostered, he is truly low maintenance and independent. I truly enjoy having him here in our household and he gets along famously with our other Jacks.
While playing in our backyard with my other Jacks, Duke injured his leg. I took him in to our vet, hoping and praying that it was just a sprain, but no such luck – he tore his cruciate ligament in his knee. The vet believes that the ligament was injured for some time and the way he hit his leg was just right and it snapped. So, poor little Duke has been in a bit of pain before and after his surgery….. and the rescue is in a bit of pain in regards to the financial hit we took. His recent surgery for repairing Duke's leg and his followup vet visits are estimated at $1,000.
Progress updates are posted below.

Well - I think it is official, Duke is healed! He has been cleared by the vet for normal activity, now we just have to wait for him to become comfortable using his leg. He's is so used to trotting around on 3 legs, it's almost like he forgets he is allowed to use it. He is now climbing stairs and he also jumped in the kiddy pool I filled up for the Jacks to lounge in today. He likes to slap the water and bite at the airborne droplets. He is quite comical.
I just wanted to thank every beautiful soul who donated to Duke and his surgery. Without wonderful people like you, our organization would not exist. Thank you, sincerely from the bottom of my heart as well as Duke's.

Duke is healing very nicely, he has had 2 follow-up visits since the last update and at both the visits the vet was very pleased with his progress. At the time of the visits he had his cast and staples removed, reduction in swelling and he is no longer wearing that darn cone on his head... he couldn’t be any happier about it too! However, I think secretly he liked plowing down the other Jacks and our shins with his cone, he was like a little earth mover. There were quite a few times where he would throw a racquetball into the air and then would catch it with his cone; he really saw the glass was half full rather than half empty - that’s for sure! He has another vet appointment next Tuesday to assess his range of motion and this will hopefully be the time when he is given a clean bill of health and able to be off his restrictions. I tell ya, it’s difficult keeping a Jack from being a Jack!
Thank you to everyone who has donated, every single dollar helps, and please know that nothing is too small. Thank you for helping the Jacks!
